Townsend, MA
A working New England village wrapped around the Squannacook River.
The Lay of the Land
Townsend has three village centers — Townsend Center, West Townsend, and the historic mill village of Townsend Harbor — strung along Route 119 between Fitchburg and the New Hampshire line. It is a town of state forest, white-steepled commons, and Saturday-morning lines at the bagel counter. Newcomers come for the land and the schools; people who grew up here rarely leave.

Trails & The Outdoors
Townsend is built around state forest. You can be on a trail in five minutes from almost any address in town.
Willard Brook State Forest
Shared with Ashby — 2,500+ acres of hemlock, brook, and well-marked trails. Picnicking, swimming at Damon Pond in summer, snowshoeing in winter.
Pearl Hill State Park
A quieter sister to Willard Brook with a small pond, family camping loops, and a network of woods walks that connect through to the larger forest.
Squannacook River
A state-designated wild river with classic catch-and-release fly fishing for native brook trout. Riverside paths through the Harbor village.
Townsend Rail Trail
A flat, family-friendly stretch of repurposed rail bed connecting through to the Mason–Greenville (NH) corridor — popular for strollers, bikes, and dog walks.

Real Estate Note
Buying in Townsend.
Townsend offers some of the most attainable land-rich living in the region — antique colonials in the village centers, newer construction on country roads, and small horse properties tucked behind the state forest. A strong fit for first-time buyers stretching for acreage, and for sellers whose buyers are migrating out of Route 2 corridor towns.
